At Alma Carraovejas we are strongly committed to the fight against climate change, working to make our activity more sustainable, minimising our footprint on the environment and caring for biodiversity as a path to progress.
We have made a commitment: to protect and safeguard our wine-growing heritage, to strengthen the organisation’s own culture and to become an inspiration, making a decisive contribution to society through our commitment to the environment and to people.
To commemorate World Tree Day, which is celebrated on this day, Alma has carried out, for the third consecutive year, a tree planting together with colleagues from the different teams and their families.
The terraces of the hillside of El Anejón have been filled with life on this date marked on the calendar to raise awareness of the need to protect our environment. More than a hundred colleagues, helped by the agroforestry team, took part in this initiative by planting 141 fruit trees.
From now on, almond, pomegranate, apple, plum, pear, apricot, cherry and acerola trees will blossom to form part of our landscape, joining the trees planted in the two previous editions. An action full of symbolism as each of these tree species has the name of the person in charge of planting it.
Carbon footprint offsetting
With this action, Alma contributes to reforestation, which makes it possible to offset part of our greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming.
In addition to their landscape value and their function as a refuge for forest biodiversity, forests play a fundamental role in the elimination of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.
In the first three months of 2024 Alma Carraovejas has planted a total of 698 trees in different parts of our estate, such as the Pico de Santa María or in the garden of the Ambivium Restaurant orchard. The fruit trees are joined by other species such as: laurel, weeping willow, cypress, mugo pine, juniper, yew, silver maple and black maple.
Over the last four years, more than 2,500 trees have been planted, 906 in 2021, 622 in 2022, 321 in 2023 and 698 in 2024, which will help to offset 699.32 tonnes of CO2 over the next forty years.
This measure joins other initiatives that we carry out within our sustainable development plan and that allow us to reduce our carbon footprint, such as the fact that 25% of the energy consumed in the different wine-growing projects comes from the implementation of our own renewable sources: photovoltaic solar panels, biomass boilers, geothermal energy and aerothermal energy.
The carbon footprint calculation is a powerful tool to detect environmental improvements during the manufacturing process of our products. We currently have scopes 1, 2 and 3, i.e. it is not only about calculating the footprint, but also about implementing measures to reduce and offset it. The target is to achieve a 30% reduction by 2050.
